5 Tips for Kia-Charlotta Nail Polish

Every brand and product is unique, and to have the most fun with any specific product it of course makes sense to know how to use it. Kia-Charlotta nail polishes basically work like any “normal” nail polish would and you also apply them like you would a “normal” nail polish i.e. apply 1-2 coats of nail polish and let dry (it’s also recommended to apply a base and top coat). However, our nail polishes are a little different to “normal” nail polishes in that they don’t include 14 of the most toxic ingredients which some other conventional nail polishes might include. This means they don’t use the “help” of some more harmful (yet often more effective) ingredients e.g. certain plasticizers, adhesives, suspending agents or solvents. For this reason, there are few little things to keep in mind when painting your nails with our nail polishes.

The following five tips will help ensure you have the best experience with your vegan and toxin free nail polish (from Kia-Charlotta).

TIP 1: Pastel or lighter nail polish shades often work better with three coats (instead of two)

When painting your nail polish with Kia-Charlotta colours we usually recommend painting two coats for the best opaque result. However, with some shades, especially some of our pastel or lighter shades, will give the best opaque result with three thin coats OR two thicker coats (but three thin coats are easier in application and dry faster).

The reason why our pastel or lighter nail polish colours need this is simply because the lighter pigments don’t give a similar colour intensity as darker or more brighter pigments (e.g. red) would. Additionally, the other ingredients (i.e. all but the pigments) a nail polish has e.g. the suspending agent a nail polish uses uses, can also have an effect on how intensely the colour comes through with each coat. Luckily however you can still use amazing light or pastel nail polish colours with less toxic ingredients and at Kia-Charlotta we have some beautiful pastel shades this Spring-Summer season. Just make sure to apply it right i.e. with three thin coats or two thicker coats of nail polish rather than the usual two thin coats. And don’t worry, three thin coats of nail polish dry almost just as fast as two thin coats.

Check out this swatch from our pastel blue nail polish “Something Blue” to see how the colour intensity is good with two coats but truly opaque after three coats:

TIP 2: Give an extra 10 minutes for your top coat to dry

We always recommend applying a base coat, two coats of nail polish and a top coat for the best long-lasting result with our nail polishes. We love our top coat which gives a beautiful gloss and a great extra protection for your manicure (meaning it will not chip as fast). Unlike a nail polish, which usually uses nitrocellulose in combination with it’s solvents, our top coat uses cellulose acetatbulyrat (with the solvents ethyl acetate and butyl acetate) as it’s film forming polymer and this simply dries a bit slower but simultaneously gives an added dose of gloss and protection. So, when applying a top coat (which we highly recommend) simply give your manicure an extra 10 minutes to fully dry and enjoy your glossy & long-lasting manicure.

TIP 3: How to find/pick the colour you know you will love?

Have you ever noticed that buying make-up (incl. nail polish) online is not always the easiest task because it seems like the images portrayed online never truly represent what the colour actually is? There are a few reasons for this one of which that often times the images are not actually photos but digital renderings of the colours/products which in itself just makes it impossible to represent that colour 100%. However, sometimes (often even) the images are real pictures but even then, you must remember that anything that is online, even a photo, is a digital representation of the colour and depending on the lighting and editing which was used to create that photo, it will always look slightly different than it would in “real”. So, it’s not exactly easy.

We at Kia-Charlotta try our best to represent our colours the best we can through different images with the colour painted on nails but also through swatch videos. We especially recommend watching the swatch videos which not only in our opinion best represent the colour but also show you how many coats you need to achieve the best result. You can find the swatch video on each individual product page.

TIP 4: Drying Time and Longevity

We often get asked: “how long does it take for the nail polish to dry and how long does it last”? The answer to that question depends on a few factors e.g. “how healthy are your nails?”, but also on how you apply the nail polish. As a rule of thumb here are few different ways you can apply our nail polish and how long it will take for them to dry and how long will it last with that application (keep in mind that everyone’s nails are different and how long it lasts on each individual will vary):

Recommended for best result:
Application: 1 coat base coat, 2 (or 3) coats of nail polish & 1 coat top coat
Drying time: from base to fully dry top coat approx. 20min
Longevity: 4-7+ Days

Save some time:
Application: 1 coat base coat and 1-2 coats of nail polish.
Drying time: 10 minutes
Longevity: 3-5 days

5-minute “Super Quick” Manicure:
Application: 1-2 coats nail polish
Drying time: 3-5 minutes
Longevity: 2-4 days

TIP 5: Best removed with a natural nail polish remover without acetone

People also often ask what the best way is to remove our nail polish. Technically you can remove our nail polish with almost any nail polish remover (which is made for normal nail polish). We however recommend our vegan natural nail polish remover which we formulated to specifically to work especially well with our nail polishes. Not only that, it is without acetone or alcohol, it includes jojoba and avocado oil to help keep our nails nourished and it smells wonderfully of lemongrass and eucalyptus. Our nail polish remover also removes any and all (“normal”) nail polishes.

Those were our five best “pro” tips to help ensure an absolutely flawless experience and manicure with our nail polishes. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact us!

We wish you an amazing day and until next week!
