NEWS! A New & More Natural 15 Free Formula!

With our new Fall-Winter 2020 nail polish collection launch, we also have some other amazing news. Since we launched Kia-Charlotta we have always said that we want to create the best nail polish with the perfect balance between quality and a toxin-free/natural recipe. Even though we were already very happy and proud of our 14 free formula, we didn’t stop there. Whilst we knew that we could probably never make a 100% natural nail polish, we knew we wanted to try and take our recipe a level further. It took us a couple of years to finally find a formula which ticked all the boxes and now we are super happy to share it with you:

We are super excited to announce that we have upgraded our free from list from 14 free to 15 free and our nail polishes are now additionally completely free from styrene/acrylates copolymer which is a commonly used adhesive in nail polish and is referred to, as per some definitions, as a liquid form of microplastic. Styrene/acrylates copolymer is often used in both conventional as well as more natural or “free from” nail polishes.

Our nail polishes are now free from the following 15 ingredients:
Phthalates (incl. Dibutylphthalate (DBP), Diethylhexyl Phthalate (DEHP)), Toluene (also Methylbenzene), Xylene, Camphor, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, Ethyl Tosylamide, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Triphenyl Phosphate, Colophoneum, Organic Halides (AOX), Parabens, Silicone, Fragrances, Animal Derived Ingredients

Additionally, our nail polish shades don’t contain acrylates copolymer or any other liquid or solid microplastics*, Benzophenone-1, Benzophenone-3 or gluten.

Not only is our free from list now 15 free (instead of 14 free) but we also have a new formula/recipe in general. Don’t worry, it’s pretty similar to our previous one but minus an

Whilst the changes in the recipe are relatively minor, the effect of these changes are significant and here is why:

The first significant difference between the old and the new recipe is that in our new recipe we don’t have any styrene/acrylates copolymer or acrylates copolymer. As we started to look for a new nail polish formula we wanted to see if we could create one which was without these ingredients. Depending on the definition, they are sometimes classified as microplastics and sometimes not. However, throughout the years we have also learned much more about microplastics in general and whilst styrene/acrylates copolymer and acrylates copolymer are not officially classified as microplastics (because they are not solid) they are often referred to as liquid forms of microplastic.

Because nail polish is highly unlikely to reach our waterways or nature, it’s not “as bad” when they include something like styrene/acrylates copolymer or acrylates copolymer and, at least until now, they both have been necessary ingredients in nail polish to make sure they last long on our nails. Non the less, we knew that if we could reduce the use of any forms of microplastic, we absolutely wanted to do so and we are super happy to say that Kia-Charlotta nail polish colours are now completely free from microplastics (liquid or solid)*.

Another small but significant difference is the inclusion of maltol in our new recipe. Maltol is a naturally occurring organic compound which is often used as a flavoring agent. In our nail polish however, we didn’t include maltol for the flavor, but for something quite different. Maltol has proven to significantly minimize the formation of nitrosamines which can be formed in very small quantities from nitrocellulose.

This is really groundbreaking because it is pretty much impossible to create a nail polish which lasts long, doesn’t chip too quick and dries fast enough without nitrocellulose (trust us, we have tried). Most nail polishes in the market, whether it’s a free from or more natural nail polish will include nitrocellulose. So, we are super happy to have found an ingredient which significantly helps minimize the production of the potentially mildly harmful nitrosamines through nitrocellulose.

Finally, we wanted to pinpoint a few other amazing qualities about our nail polish formula:

One of the main ingredients of a nail polish are its solvents and, in our recipe, we use ethyl acetate and butyl acetate. These can be either petrochemically derived or plant derived and in our nail polish shades they are 100% plant derived.

Whilst a nail polish can never be 100% natural, recyclable and/or biodegradable, we have done our best to create the most eco-friendly version of a nail polish that we could. Not only are the solvents in our nail polish shades 100% derived from plants (instead of petrochemically derived) but we also do not contain any styrene/acrylates copolymer or acrylates copolymer (as per some definitions referred to as liquid microplastics) which you will find in almost all other nail polishes whether conventional or more natural. Additionally, we have made the conscious choice to use 5ml bottles so that we can minimize any unnecessary nail polish waste. Finally, we do not use any plastic in our secondary or delivery packaging and only use FSC certified and/or recycled paper.

We believe that when it comes to nail polish, Kia-Charlotta nail polishes are pretty much the most eco-friendly option you can find.

At Kia-Charlotta our mission is to create 100% vegan make-up and nail polish products in premium quality meaning we do not compromise and try to find the perfect balance between quality and safe/natural as well as vegan ingredients. Although we stay away from the most harmful ingredients and animal derived ingredients, we promise there is no compromise when it comes to quality. Our nail polish last in average between 4-7 days and they have a beautiful opaque glossy finish.

Of course, all our products are completely vegan and cruelty-free certified by “The Vegan Society” & “PETA”.

That was everything for now about our new 15 free vegan nail polish formula. We hope you are as excited as we are about all the new developments and we are super excited for you to try our new nail polishes out. Shop our new collection here
