Why Does my Nail Polish Chip so Fast?

Do you feel like your nail polish chips quicker than it does with others? We all have different nails where some have strong nails and the others more brittle and weaker nails, some have more oily nails and the others have less oily nails etc all which affect how long our manicure lasts. There are many reasons to why your nail polish might chip faster than it does with others and today we tell you the five most common reasons and what you can do to help your nails be stronger and nail polish last longer.

Why Does my Nail Polish Chip so Fast?

If your nail polish tends to ship quite quick it is likely that one of the five following reasons is applicable to you.

1. You are not using a top and base coat
This is one of the most common reasons why your manicure might not last as long as it does with others. A base and top coat are made to help your manicure last as long as possible where the base coat acts as ›glue‹ for your nail polish and the top coat is a clear and extra strong coat which acts as a protective layer to your nail polish.

See our blog post on why we recommend using a top and base coat:

Extra tip: Reapply a top coat every two days If your nail polish tends to chip easier.

2. Your nails are dry and brittle
Our nails are like our skin and they are different with everybody. Some of us have stronger nails while some of us have weak and brittle nails. If your nails are dry then they tend to be more brittle and also break more easily. If you find it difficult to grow long nails because your nails always break at some point that is a sign that your nails are dry and brittle. If your nails break easily your nail polish will also chip easier. Make sure you take good care of your hands and nails by moisturizing them and indulging in a hand and nail scrub. Also apply a nourishing nail oil to every now and then. Finally, make sure eat a healthy and balanced diet where you feed your body with vitamins and nutrients that will make your nails strong.

3. Your nails are exposed to water a lot
When our nails are exposed to water they get softer and so does your nail polish and when your nail polish softens it tends to chip easier. This is why when you are doing activities where you expose your hands to water a lot e.g. washing dishes, cleaning or even gardening it is important to wear gloves to protect your nails and manicure.

4. You do not wrap your nail polish
When painting your nails, we recommend that you always finish of painting the tip of your nails as well. This will ›wrap up‹ your manicure and make it harder for it to start shipping at the tips (which is where the chipping usually starts).

5. Your nails are not clean/ Your nails are too oily
For a long-lasting manicure make sure you have a clean base, meaning make sure there are no extra oils on your nails before painting them. An oily base will make it harder for your nail polish (or base coat) to adhere on your nails which will make it easier to chip prematurely. We recommend that you do not apply nail polish directly after removing your old nail polish (especially with a natural nail polish remover) because the remover is often quite oily leaving an extra oily base for your nail (don’t worry – the oils are good for you and your nails will absorb them. Just wait a night or so until applying nail polish i.e. until your nails have completely absorbed the oils). The same rule applies for hand cream or any nail oils.

Also, keep in mind that some of us have a naturally oilier nail which can also affect the longevity of our manicure. Before applying nail polish you can clean your nails with some vinegar which will help remove any excess oils.

These were the 5 top reasons to why your nail polish might chip prematurely. We hope this could help you out and should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
